这本词典的一个特点是术语之间的互参：一个术语的释义中涉及的基他术语都用特殊字体排印，可在相应词条下查阅其释义。原文的黑体词条和术语，译文也用黑体；原文释义中用大字母排印的术语，译文用楷体；原文加引导（单引）的术语和名称，译文也加引号（双引）标出。为便于查阅，词典最后增加了“汉英术语对照表”。这张对照表对术语的汉译英也会有参考价值。

本词典1978年出第一版（国内有译本《语言学和语音学基础词典》，方立等译，北京语言学院出版社），经三次修订和增补，现在这个版本共收1400个主词条，释义中又含1400个黑体术语，1200个加引号的特殊名称，因此共对当今语言学文献中常出现的4000个术语作出了说明，数量比第一版增加一倍，是迄今为止最全面详尽、最新的一部语言学词典。
