Isherwood depicts how flawed people make their lives in a precarious time with the restrained humor and sympathy of an (queer) English gentleman. At times he seems to have torn down the façade and pierced into a person’s soul, yet at other times his words drift as weak complaints in an impregnable whirlwind.

愉快的阅读，产生了自己的英语还有救的幻觉。故事好读，有几篇真是感人至深。30年代的德国，时代背景特殊，里面的情绪却不限于某个时代的。最吸引我的是作者的距离和视角，在旁观和参与之间，取得一个舒适而轻易的位置，毫不费力似的，至少文字上看起来是这样。
