Collins Classics这个版本是便宜，排版与拼写舛错之处倒不少（对比Norton Critical版本）。不过回到作品本身，确实值得一读。George Eliot对道德（即如何与他人相处，调和个体追求及特质与社会规约及的矛盾）的关注使得小说几近成为一本伦理大片，读起来很沉重，并不轻松，不若将副标题改成What's the Right Thing to Do????? 作者站在全知视角充分挖掘角色的心理，因而几乎对每个人都是充满理解与同情的（尽管不乏Jane Austen式一针见血的讥刺反讽，但不尖酸刻薄，而是带着同情的戏谑）。这点与作者的道德关切相契合，即需尽量理解同情他人，将一种以邻人为友的归属感（以感情为理性指导）作为道德判断的基础（不然，为了私欲什么道德选择不能用理性自洽呢）。
