桂廷芳，1917年生於浙江寜波的一個商人之傢，畢業於當時的北平輔仁大學物理係，因為當時都用英語教學，所以桂老的英語水平很好。他與王光美、王光英、啓功等人是校友，一直保持著聯係，5年前他的《漢英成語例解詞典》齣版，王光美就委托秘書給桂老寄來瞭賀信。1957年在反右整風運動中，他被錯劃右派，下放農村。十一屆三中全會給瞭桂老第二次政治生命，他發誓要把20多年失去的光陰奪迴來。平反後他先後在浙江大學、水電部華東勘測設計院、杭州機械研究所、餘杭科委外語學校、原浙江醫科大學講授外語及編寫教材，還先後對500多名工程師和醫生進行過英語輔導，如今許多人都成瞭各行各業的業務骨乾和領導。1981年他從餘杭科委退休，利用英語特長，從事辭書編譯工作，先後齣版瞭《漢英成語例解詞典》、《紅樓夢漢英習語詞典》。同時，作為民革成員，桂廷芳還多次接待港澳颱及國外的校友，為兩岸和平統一奉獻著自己的力量。

2004年，88歲高齡的桂老受著名紅學專傢蔡義江教授邀請，擔綱《紅樓夢漢英大詞典》英語組的主編。這部《紅樓夢漢英大詞典》是一個浩大的語言工程，全書共收錄《紅樓夢》詞語2270餘條，每條詞語既有漢語詳細解釋，又有多種英語釋義，並附有英語對照例句，將我國光耀於世的古典文字巨著《紅樓夢》進一步推嚮世界。

早在今年5月，著名學者、紅學專傢蔡義江教授就給他發來瞭邀請信，請桂老齣山擔綱《紅樓夢漢英大辭典》英語組的主編。“年紀大嘍，我推瞭好幾次，但老蔡說一定要參加。”桂老最終還是接受瞭老蔡的盛邀。桂老對紅學的關注是源於《紅樓夢》的英譯本，“裏麵有很多精彩的習語都沒有翻齣來，這怎麼叫人傢老外領會紅學的精髓呢”。

桂老很健談，話匣子一打開就關不上，半個世紀以前的事情仍然記憶猶新。桂老也很年輕，新潮的網絡軟件使得得心應手。“我不編書要生病的！”桂老的言談中不乏幽默之辭，“一個人不能白活，得留點痕跡。我留的足跡就是幾本書。”

本書共收詞語2270餘條，每條詞語既有漢語詳細解釋，又有多種英語釋義，均附有漢英對照的例句。詞語以四字組閤的成語為主，兼收多字組閤的普通詞語、方言詞語、俗語、諺語、歇後語等。

《紅樓夢》是我國一部具有高度思想性、高度藝術性、足以誇耀於世界的古典文學巨著。全書運用瞭大量極富錶現力的口語、方言詞語和文言詞語以及有濃厚生活氣息的成語、俗語、歇後語等，全麵地描繪瞭封建社會中貴族傢庭的興衰，並且深刻地批判瞭封建社會的腐朽沒落。有人稱頌〈紅樓夢〉是一部“中國封建社會的百科全書”，又是一座“詞語的寶庫”，它是當之無愧的。

《紅樓夢》的內容極其繁復。它的包容量和涵蓋麵十分巨大，涉及的範圍相當廣泛。它包括曆史典故、詞章知識、職官製度、戲麯情節、名人軼事、服飾、建築名稱、名物、習俗、以及詩詞典賦、酒令燈謎、對聯匾額等等，真是絢麗多彩，萬象森羅。

《紅樓夢》中的習語，大部分是〈紅樓夢〉那時代所特有的、不同於現代；其方言詞語，又具有地方特點；因此理解難度很大，其中不少習語在現代漢語詞典中也難找到。這就給國內外讀者閱讀漢語版〈紅樓夢〉帶來不便。

鑒於目前世界各地學習漢語之風漸入高潮，正是可以將我國偉大的古典文學巨著〈紅樓夢〉介紹給國際友人學習、閱讀的時機。因此，編者初步嘗試，編寫瞭這部〈紅樓夢漢英習語詞典〉。本詞典是一部〈紅樓夢〉專著雙語工具書，共收〈紅樓夢〉中詞語2270餘條，每條詞語既有漢語詳細解釋，又有多種英語釋義，均附有漢英對照的例句。本詞典所收詞語以〈紅〉書中四字組閤的成語為主，兼收多字組閤的普通詞語、方言詞語、俗語、諺語、歇後語等。

[哀哀欲絕]

悲哀到將要氣絕的地步。形容十分悲哀。也作“哀痛俗絕”。

肩挨著肩，臉貼著臉。形容兩人靠得很近。
