Stephen Mumford is Professor of Metaphysics at the Department of Philosophy, University of Nottingham. He is also Head of the School of Humanities and Dean of the Faculty of Arts. He has written many papers and books in metaphysics, including a number of more popular works intended for a non-specialist audience including articles in "Times Higher Education magazine", encyclopaedias, and magazines. His most famous book is "Dispositions" (Oxford, 1998) but he also authored "Laws in Nature" (Routledge, 2004), "Getting Causes from Powers" (with Rani Lill Anjum, Oxford, 2011) and "Watching Sport: Aesthetics, Ethics and Emotions" (Routledge, 2011). He is a frequent public speaker at both academic conferences and more popular events and has delivered talks in around 30 countries.

Metaphysics is one of the traditional four main branches of philosophy, alongside ethics, logic and epistemology. It is also an area that continues to attract and hold a fascination for many people yet it is associated with being complex and abstract. For some it is associated with the mystical or religious. For others it is known through the metaphysical poets who talk of love and spirituality. 评分重要的不是答案，而是問題和思路。畢竟是為瞭探究自然的本質。
评分非常好的入門導論，從實例齣發，深入淺齣。剛看到 What is an introduction? 就笑瞭，作者真是可愛。介紹的順序也很友好，從最直觀最通俗的“桌子”入手，慢慢地依次談到概念、整體、變化、原因、時間、人、可能性、無，討論完這些之後，最後總結“什麼是形而上學”——迴答這個問題的最好方法自然是“我們一起來做一做形而上學”，而這恰是前九章的內容。科學與形而上學之間並沒有明確的界限，拒斥形而上學的思考會導緻科學變得疏離而不可感知，會導緻人的否定與消亡。不過我覺得形而上學對科學來說是緊迫的，但對我們來說大概是不緊迫的。當然，如亞裏士多德在《形而上學》的開篇所說，求知是人類的本性；這些問題就在那裏，等待著我們去探求答案。

评分Metaphysics的翻譯取自《易經》“形而上者謂之道，形而下者謂之器”，這個日本人的經典意譯讓人不得不膜拜。西哲形而上研究的問題範圍和東方人研究的內容乍看之下沒什麼兩樣，但我一直納悶洋人腦子裏怎麼冒齣這些問題來的（形成的背景）？東方的形而上類哲學問題是在實踐上建立起來的，且在各自體係裏發揮著不可或缺的作用，而西哲的形而上學感覺就是純粹的腦洞大開，無助於生産生活啊而且還annoying（神煩）啊~雖然作者最後一章做瞭些辯護但是在我看來有點蒼白無力。如果亞裏士多德當年能到印度和中國來參訪大德老道，我想這個學科一定不會像現在這樣被貶為枯燥乏味的無用之學吧。
