The Bell Jar

Sylvia Plath (October 27, 1932 – February 11, 1963) was an American poet, novelist and short story writer.Known primarily for her poetry, Plath also wrote a semi-autobiographical novel, The Bell Jar, under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas. The book's protagonist, Esther Greenwood, is a bright, ambitious student at Smith College who begins to experience a mental breakdown while interning for a fashion magazine in New York. The plot parallels Plath's experience interning at Mademoiselle magazine and subsequent mental breakdown and suicide attempt.Along with Anne Sexton, Plath is credited with advancing the genre of confessional poetry initiated by Robert Lowell and W. D. Snodgrass.

The Bell Jar is American writer Sylvia Plath's only novel, which was originally published under the pseudonym "Victoria Lucas" in 1963. The novel is semi-autobiographical with the names of places and people changed. The book is often regarded as a roman à clef, with the protagonist's descent into mental illness paralleling Plath's own experiences with what may have been either bipolar disorder or clinical depression. Plath committed suicide a month after its first publication.

这世界上写诗的人永远比读诗的人要多. 我猜知道Plath是自杀而死的人也比读过她诗的人要多. Plath用笔名发表了这本<钟型罩>, 她比喻自己的抑郁症为钟型罩 - 外面的世界跟她只隔着玻璃, 她看的一清二楚, 但是身在钟型罩中的她却缺氧抑郁. 看书之前生怕这是本抱怨生活, 责怪老天...
