作者将目光集中于第一篇（生存论分析），规正了标准译本中某些名词的译法，用生动的例证和丰富的文本证据（新出讲课稿）勾勒了海德格尔通过上手/在手概念对传统哲学的突破，这种突破超出了所谓“实践哲学转向”。作者还注重与当代分析哲学界对话，批评了塞尔等人。本书的最大贡献在于为不能完全把握原著的读者提供了一种可作为出发点的视角，其不足也正在于这种视角有作者本人旨趣的深深痕迹。一方面，他对胡塞尔的理解几乎满盘皆错，基本将其等同于笛卡尔或塞尔，没有把握到现象学的突破之处。另一方面，他误以为海德格尔有关沉沦的学说可以清晰地划分为存在论的和心理学的，可以保留前者而舍弃后者，但在海德格尔那里对本真性的逃避并非一个心理事件，而总是发现得太迟的“早已如此”，对这种后知后觉时间性的忽视在作者对第二篇的逃避中也可见一斑。

作者手段真可谓举重若轻，简明的叙述底下是对海著意涵非常深切的理解。然而不足是，绝大部分解释是作者自己的语言，流畅则流畅，作为“解经”则嫌不够严谨。总的来说，本书是胡国教授给本科生上课讲解经典的一般体现，对读海著者来说，是非常好的参考。
