The utopian design and organization of Brasilia--the modernist new capital of Brazil--were meant to transform Brazilian society. In this sophisticated, pioneering study of Brasilia from its inception in 1957 to the present, James Holston analyzes this attempt to change society by building a new kind of city and the ways in which the paradoxes of constructing an imagined future subvert its utopian premises. Integrating anthropology with methods of analysis from architecture, urban studies, social history, and critical theory, Holston presents a critique of modernism based on a powerfully innovative ethnography of the city.

有點羅嗦,不過很精彩,不妨從拉圖爾的體係理解,第四章的討論對建築外行而言很有趣。

評分FYS001 讀死我瞭 但Holston這本評判architectural modernism的專著十分精彩 承載著an alternative urbanism against bourgeois capitalistic outlook理想的現代主義最終還是在dogmatic teleological vision of the future egalitarian city下加劇瞭economic disparity politicizing architecture的限度在於用architecture embody class criticism 而不是進行烏托邦城市的設想 同時也有著對avant-guard的批判 極好 唉 漫漫長夜 尚未成功 仍需努力
評分for those looking for a critique of New Towns in the Third World, herewith, thee book
