This book sheds light on major British political thinkers, from Sir Thomas Smith to David Hume, by providing fascinating accounts of the 'British problem' in the early modern period, of the relationship between Protestantism and empire, of theories of property, liberty and political economy in imperial perspective, and of the imperial contribution to the emergence of British 'identities' in the Atlantic world.

很不錯的一本曆史書，介紹瞭英倫三島何以變成最初以protestant, maritime, commercial and free為指導意識形態的聯閤王國，也就是大不列顛第一帝國。可惜因為僅僅是介紹起源，美國革命這個分水嶺時間之後大不列顛第二帝國的意識形態曆史就木有瞭，真是有點意猶未盡的感覺啊。
