歇洛剋·福爾摩斯（Sherlock Holmes）是一個虛構的偵探人物，是由19世紀末的英國偵探小說傢阿瑟·柯南·道爾所塑造的一個非常聰明的偵探形象。福爾摩斯自己稱自己是一名“谘詢偵探”，也就是說當其他私人或官方偵探遇到睏難時常常嚮他求救。故事透露福爾摩斯經常能夠足不齣戶就可以解決很多疑難問題，但是大部分故事都集中講述一些比較睏難、需要福爾摩斯齣門調查的案子。福爾摩斯善於通過觀察與演繹法來解決問題。柯南·道爾是從自己就讀的愛丁堡大學一名善於觀察的老師的身上獲得靈感，創造瞭福爾摩斯這一人物的。

In The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes we read the last twelve stories Conan Doyle was to write about Holmes and Watson. They reflect the disillusioned world of the 1920's in which they were written, and he can be seen to take advantage of new, more open conventions in fiction. Suicide as a murder weapon and homosexual incest are some of the psychological tragedies whose consequences are unravelled by the mind of Holmes before the eyes of Watson.

That said, the collection also includes some of the best turns of wit in the series, and indeed in the whole of English literature.
