傳言Marlowe是莎士比亞的ghostwriter，這部作品就可以看齣Marlowe對於曆史劇的掌握。龐大的故事全部濃縮在短短的一百頁裏，故事緊湊衝突迭起，盡管語言上相對於莎翁遜色不少，但是Marlowe對於故事的格局和整體性比莎翁高瞭不少。當代讀者較多把注意力放在Gaveston和Edward的同性戀情節上，但是本書衝突爆發的導火索卻實為power and class，以此看齣真部作品格局的龐大和主題的包羅萬象，同性戀隻是一部分，封建主義下的權力抗爭，國王和地方郡主之間的明爭暗鬥，女性對於男性的權力掌控和被動壓迫，階級之間的不可逾越性。。。總之是目前所有看過的play中之分壯闊宏大的一本瞭
