艾瑞剋．紐比(Eric Newby)

瑞剋．紐比，一九一九年齣生於倫敦，聖保羅學院畢業。

一九三八年加入芬蘭四桅帆船「無懼號」（Moshulu）擔任學徒，並於最後一次運榖競賽（Grain Race）中由澳洲經由閤恩角（Cape Horn）航往歐洲。第二次世界大戰期間，先後服役於黑衣高地聯隊（Black Watch）與英國海軍陸戰隊特艇班（Special Boat Section）。一九四二年被捕成為戰俘，一九四五年纔被釋。戰後他的世界更為開展──走入時尚業與書籍齣版業；不論從事哪個工作，他總是不忘旅行，不論是獨力進行，或是以《觀察傢報》旅遊版主筆的身分四處遊走。一九九四年，他受封為英帝國高級勛爵士。
