此前阅读了中译本，这次阅读了英文版，感觉精彩了好多！沃尔芙试图寻找的是一种middle way，既表明艺术的社会建构，同时又避免对艺术家和艺术品的还原。当然，同样是艺术社会学，同样论述艺术的社会建构，同样避免还原论，但是，何种社会建构，避免何种还原，具体所指可能存在巨大差别。这要从历史语境和学术脉络中去寻找。同时，她批判美国艺术社会学是“狭隘的经验主义”，而她自己在英国原本是在社会学系，但到了美国教书却只能进入艺术史系，难以进入美国的社会学系，对此作者似乎颇有不平之意。当然，从中我们也可以看出英美艺术社会学的一些差别。

很好读的一本书。当前我们对艺术以及对艺术家的想象都基于它们在社会结构中不断被定位从而演化出来的结果，作者的考据充分，相关议题都解释得很全面。
