From the Author
Dear Reader,
My day job is as chief sports reporter for The Times and, since I started writing books, my colleagues have wondered about my new obsession - swapping the drama of the dressing-room for that of the bedroom.
For me, writing rom-com fiction is a blissful diversion though I am also often amazed at the similarities. Sports stories work best when they become more than a glorified scoreline, when sportspeople are truly tested, when they have to explore the true dimensions of their character: when sport unveils personalities. It is here that we are on the same ground.
I wanted to write The Proposal because, I believe, it does this.Via Bermuda, New York, the soft-drinks aisle in Sainsburys and some really crap sex, my characters go on a fascinating journey. This book is the penalty shoot-out of their lives.
The essential plot follows two best friends who make a pact: if they are both single at 35, they will marry each other. The questions are: can you marry your best friend? can you transform friendship into love? does the crap sex matter? and does a relationship stand a better long-term chance if you both use Lurpak or Lurpak Lighter? I am sure you will agree that these are the essential mysteries of the universe and I hope you will enjoy discovering the answers.
Yours sincerely

Fans of Mike Gayle will enjoy this funny and moving story about loyalty and infidelity, stretching the boundaries of friendship and confronting the past...
Then: Back at university, Dominic makes a drunken pact with Lucy: if neither of us are married by 35, let's marry each other.
Now: They are 35. And they are wondering if it could actually work. Dominic's quit life as a brilliant New York advertising exec and moved back to London to find out. Lucy is a single mother and doesn't know whether to take him seriously.
The proposal would be ideal were he not married, had she not tried marriage once before and was their sex not quite so bad.
Can friendship be redesigned to make a marriage? Or is there simply too much excess baggage?
