以ecology視角切入，不難發現小說中human&non-human agencies的頻繁誤認(animalizing&anthropomorphic metaphors)。自然更具備affective power，以暴雨後林地的頹敗構成對Giles重病去世的預敘。兩種生態意義上（interconnectedness）的人際模式——reciprocal&hierarchical，前者以Marty和Giles為代錶(true complement in the other sex, corollary)，後者則具體化為Grace在patriarchal/erotic/legislative coercion間的徒然掙紮。哈代追問的或許仍是命運、時間、社會結構控製下個體自主權的限度問題。
