蘿賓．麥金莉（Robin McKinley）

不是個多產的作家。自一九七八年首部小說問世，至今二十多年來，她的作品不過十來部，包括八本長篇小說、兩本短篇集、一本編輯作品，及一本與作家丈夫彼得•狄金森（Peter Dickinson）合著的短篇集，平均兩年完成一部作品，她能博得大多數英美讀者的喜愛，更躋身當代重要青少年奇幻作家之列。

麥金莉於一九七八年出版的首部長篇小說《美女》（Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast），改寫自著名童話〈美女與野獸〉，卻賦予女主角堅強自主的新面貌。女主角仍然是么女，仍然心地善良，仍然名叫「美女」（Beauty），但實際上相貌平庸——作家的幽默感與刻意顛覆之意在此可見一斑。她的兩個姊姊雖然貌美，卻非傳統故事中那般壞心腸，反而姊妹三人和樂融融。儘管小說主軸與重要轉折大致沿襲原貌，但在麥金莉筆下，性格不同的童話人物儼然經歷了相當不同的自我成長之旅，童話也有了新意。《美女》因而為童話新詮類型創作立下典範。細心的讀者可能會想到，迪士尼於一九九一年推出同樣改編自同名童話的動畫片《美女與野獸》，其中女主角的形象似乎與麥金莉這部小說中相貌平庸、酷愛讀書、個性獨立的女主角不謀而合呢！可見麥金莉重塑童話中的女性形象，影響之深遠。
