吉姆·罗杰斯生于1942年，5岁时找到第一份工作，在棒球场拾空瓶子。长大后获得耶鲁大学奖学金，入耶鲁大学学习，曾是学校赛艇队的舵手。从耶鲁大学毕业后，又就读于牛津大学的巴里奥学院。曾在美国陆军服务。退役后进入华尔街工作，与另一合伙人共同成立了面向全球的量子基金。此后的10年里，该基金盈利超过4000%，而同时期的标准普尔指数只上涨了不足50%。罗杰斯37岁那年决定退休，可人并没有闲着。
