對英國本土英語影響最大的，應該是愛爾蘭的詩性傳統與美國英語的形成。前者是無窮無盡的想象力，後者是無邊無際的勇氣。 詩人歐陽昱的譯筆有翻譯者少有的果斷，對一些概括性、引領性詞匯的翻譯命名頗有趣味，也許此中的精神恰恰符閤瞭英語自身的變化。

其實翻譯的水平還是可以的，這本書也是英語史著作中最通俗的一本，David Crystal也推薦過。不過有點Anglo-saxon中心論。我更喜歡John Mcwhorter的野史版。
