He interviews strangers and is tantalized by half-clues until, at last, he grasps a thread that leads him through the maze of his own repressed experience.

On one level Missing Person is a detective thriller, a 1950s film noir mix of smoky cafés, illegal passports, and insubstantial figures crossing bridges in the fog. On another level, it is also a haunting meditation on the nature of the self. Modiano's sparce, hypnotic prose, superbly translated by Daniel Weissbort, draws his readers into the intoxication of a rare literary experience. (Verba Mundi)

作者简介

帕特里克•莫迪亚诺，法国当代著名作家，2014年诺贝尔文学奖获得者。

莫迪亚诺1945年生于巴黎郊外布洛涅—比扬古地区，父亲是犹太金融企业家，母亲是比利时演员。1968年莫迪亚诺在伽利玛出版社出版处女作《星形广场》一举成名。1972年的《环城大道》获法兰西学院小说大奖，1978年的《暗店街》获得龚古尔奖。1996年，莫迪亚诺获得法国国家文学奖。他还分别于2010年和2012年获得法兰西学院奇诺•德尔•杜卡基金会世界奖和奥地利欧洲文学奖这两项终身成就奖。

莫迪亚诺的小说常常通过寻找、调查、回忆和探索，将视野转回到从前的岁月，描写“消逝”的过去；也善于运用象征手法，通过某一形象表现出深远的含义。

除了最早的三部曲，Modiano的小说都一样，残缺的叙事者在失重的时间里寻找自己，并发现无法找回。轻柔到没有形体的语言，节制到极点的叙事，唯一的执着是巴黎数不完的街道名。这部小说由于设定，几乎像是Modiano风格的模版，倒不算是写的最好的。

不喜欢英译版的标题。

读得时候脑子里不时闪过的一句话是“要你不好好学法语”。内容很抓人，但是译者的措辞选择是可以更好一些的。
