This book studies Virgil's ideas of nature, history, sense of nation, and sense of identity. It is exact and patient in its probing for nuance and detail, but also bold, wide, and original in its scope. 像Jenkyns这样淹博的学者有能力处理tanta materia，但纵使Auerbach也难以穷尽文献，只好仰赖有限的专著和基于“统摄性直觉”的专断，却也往往独有会心。比如还原Transpadane Experience的生成，此类诠释学努力是寻常维吉尔研究者不能梦见的，可以说很好地说明了C. S. Lewis理想的研究。故此也能原谅具体判断上不够“学术”的地方；大概Jenkyns究竟更接近真实的维吉尔。
