He was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, and spent most of his adult life working for an insurance company in Connecticut. His best-known poems include "Anecdote of the Jar," "The Emperor of Ice Cream," "The Idea of Order at Key West," "Sunday Morning ," and "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird."

开端《斐卓篇》就是一个很好的隐喻。华莱斯的诗论浪漫色彩很重，和他的诗大不一样。

史蒂文斯版的诗与哲学之争，以现实和想象（相互依存）为关键词。诗人无使命，诗人享受存在，诗人的角色是帮助人们过自己的生活。不知道史是不是在自己的暗喻中迷路了，有些观点与他在Opus Posthumous中表达的完全不一致。这提醒我以后阅读“金句体”材料更要小心。（苦笑，在我的阅读层面讲是诗与散文之争，比他的诗更难读啊我敲）
