快一个月间缓慢地读了八篇中的七篇。柏林喜欢写很爽的长句并反复用不同方式表达同样的观点，入选这本集子的篇目在内容上也互有重合，但仍很好看。最重要、印象最深刻的当属占据正文三分之一左右谈Joseph de Maistre的一篇。最后查豆瓣才知道此书2009年就有中译本了，但应该不是基于普林斯顿UP这个2013年修订加序的版本；中文版五百多人读过，很壮观了。
