"The Rocky Road to Nowhere" is an informal history of the Blue Ridge Railroad in South Carolina (1850-1861). It was to be the last link in an ambitious plan to connect Charleston, SC, with the vast new lands west of the Alleghenies. Included were a series of tunnels--3 in South Carolina, 2 more in Georgia. The longest of these, the unfinished tunnel at Stumphouse Mountain, SC, which would have been more than a mile long, has long been the subject of myth and mystery. Here for the first time is an accurate and entertaining account of what really happened there. The story is a fine mix of heroes and villains, and offers a tantalizing tale of what if's and if only's, which could have made the little German town of Walhalla, the gateway to the west instead of Atlanta! Strong men like John C. Calhoun, Father Francis O'Connell and John Wagener add depth and interest to the tale.
