這是由橫跨科奇幻學術及評論圈的大家 Gary K. Wolfe 所編纂的科奇幻專業術語彙編，以字典方式排列，盡量以一段的篇幅解釋每個條目。

卷首有篇長文，一方面簡述科奇幻學術的發展歷史，另一方面說明這些專業術語辭彙的種種源頭。科奇幻研究中，非學術性質的行內研究（尤其是科幻史的部分）與評論極為重要，許多術語均來自於行內出版或同好圈。而科奇幻學術發展初期，也往往借助於傳統文學與文化學者對 fantastic literature 的看法。還有不少則是早期涉獵科奇幻領域的學者開山立派，獨見創獲之辭。這種種不同的來源，使得科奇幻術語有其盤根錯節、複雜難解的背景。

事實上，若是光看本書就想了解這些辭彙，那就把科奇幻想得太淺了。Wolfe 在此不過提供了最基本的解釋，要更加深入，則非瀏覽原出處不行，同時還得擴展自己對於作品本身的閱讀質量，相互印證，才能心領神會。本書的另一個缺點是太舊了，二十年下來，不知又新增多少行內的術語？Wolfe 老大有空的話，不知是否有改版的計畫？

一般讀者可以不用管這些，但要進入科奇幻研究之門的人不可不備。
