Incorporating recent developments in our knowledge of the nature of speech, Ladefoged also updates the original edition's discussion of the basic properties of sound waves; variations in loudness, pitch, and quality of speech sounds; wave analysis; and the hearing and production of speech.

實在太囉嗦瞭……尤其最後兩章，數學一復雜，每一步運算都要講清楚，仿佛讀者小學還沒畢業……整本書其實不深，需要Johnson的書作為補充。用來作語音聲學入門還不錯。
