官方手冊就是官方手冊。第一部分不到四十頁清楚地講瞭IPA理論和應用中的問題，理論分析能算深入，很多建議也非常實用；第三部分既講IPA的發展史，又給齣瞭為病理語言創製的ExtIPA錶和參考書目；第二部分大量的語言實例，配閤錄音既可以廣讀者見聞，又可以提供記音的練習。
