Aby M. Warburg (18661929) is recognized not only as one of the century's preeminent art and Renaissance historians but also as a founder of twentieth-century methods in iconology and cultural studies in general. Warburg's 1923 lecture, first published in German in 1988 and now available in the first complete English translation, offers at once a window on his career, a formative statement of his cultural history of modernity, and a document in the ethnography of the American Southwest. This edition includes thirty-nine photographs, many of them originally presented as slides with the speech, and a rich interpretive essay by the translator. The presentation grew out of Warburg's 1895 encounter with the Hopi Indians, an experience he claimed generated his theory of the Renaissance. In this powerfully written piece, Warburg investigates the relationships among ethnography, iconography, and cultural studies to develop a multicultural history of modernity.

讲稿都是听讲者整理的，瓦尔堡本人没有写。现在的英文译本，包括这本书和另一个，都比Uwe最后整理出的德文版少好几个段落。另一个英文版的讲稿是Getrud Bing 和Fritz Saxl的整理版

如果每天都能读书那么有效率就好了。这篇演讲是1923年瓦尔堡为了证明自己精神正常而给的讲座。从印第安蛇舞，到古希腊神话中的拉奥孔和阿斯克勒庇俄斯，到伊甸园中的蛇，最后是现代社会中的电线，演讲本身就像一条蛇穿梭在历史和文化之间。书另附了一篇分析，对理解瓦尔堡的生平、犹太身份、以及他对神话、符号的理解很有帮助。
