Connu avant tout pour ses remarquables travaux sur la Renaissance italienne, Daniel Arasse a touché un vaste public avec Le Détail, pour une histoire rapprochée de la peinture (1992) et la série d'émissions qu'il enregistra pour France Culture, Histoires de peintures (2003). Il fut régulièrement sollicité par le milieu de l'art contemporain et n'hésita pas à s'y engager, notamment en écrivant une monographie sur Anselm Kiefer en 2000. Anachroniques rassemble dix textes écrits à partir de 1993 et consacrés à des artistes modernes (Max Beckmann, Mark Rothko) ou contemporains (Alain Fleischer, Andres Serrano, Cindy Sherman, Michael Snow). La diversité des artistes étudiés montre l'ouverture de Daniel Arasse et la liberté qu'il s'autorisait dans le choix des commandes qui lui furent proposées. Mais la motivation qui l'anime est toujours fondée sur l'intérêt qu'il porte au regard artistique et aux dispositifs anachroniques que celui-ci met en œuvre par rapport au passé ou à certaines questions théoriques anciennes que l'art d'aujourd'hui renouvelle. L'autoportrait, la mort, le désir; les petits bricolages ou les grandes machines rhétoriques ; la relation entre mémoire, histoire et mythes, ou celle entre pulsion sexuelle et pulsion créatrice ; les diverses modalités de la représentation du temps et, corrélativement, le rapport dialectique entre temporalité et chronologie dans l'œuvre d'un artiste.
