20多歲的時候，莫奈特公開了自己性取向，之後他與羅格·郝維茨相遇，二人相守二十多載。同樣也就在他20多歲的時候，他漸漸從詩歌中醒來，興趣轉向小說。直到80年代之前他始終未碰詩歌。

1977年，莫內特和郝維茨來到洛杉磯。就在好萊塢，莫內特寫下了一系列的劇本，雖從未投拍，但為他成為作家練就了筆力。1978年至1982年莫內特出版了四本小說，這些小說獲得巨大成功，從而開啟了他身為暢銷作家的歷程。此外，莫內特也寫了一些電影小說。

當郝維茨在80年早期確診感染艾滋病時，莫奈特的人生急劇改變。 1986年郝維茨去世，莫奈特放筆寫下了他們與艾滋病鬥爭的多年歲月（Borrowed Time 超越時光，1988年），還有他自身如何面對愛人的逝去（Love Alone 孤寂的愛，1988）。迄今為止，這些作品都是關於艾滋病的最具有感染力的作品。
