恶化现象后面，潜伏着更多的力量。其中之一，如今的经济现实逼得父母必须比前代更卖力工作，才能维持一个家。也就是说，大部份的父母陪伴小孩的时间，比不过当年自己的父母。越来越多的家庭，住所离自己的亲戚相当遥远。常常，家长根本就不敢放小孩到街上去玩，造访邻居就更甭提了。小孩花越来越多的时间盯着电视或者电脑的萤光幕，而不是在户外和别的小孩玩在一起。可是，长久以往，小孩学习基本情绪及社交技能的方式，一直就是靠父母和亲戚的教导，不然就是和别的小孩打打闹闹，在游戏中学习。

学不到基本的情绪智能，后果正越来越严重。例如，迹象显示，无法辨别焦虑和飢饿的女孩比较容易患饮食失调症，年幼时拙于控制冲动的女生到了十七、八岁也比较有可能怀孕。早年情绪冲动的男生将来则可能耍太保，有暴力倾向。应付不来焦虑及抑鬱感受的小孩长大后则较可能嗑药、酗酒。
