卡爾·沙夫納，畢生親近海洋，是漁夫，也是海洋科學傢，提倡復原海洋資源和生命力不遺餘力，曾獲普鳥慈善基金會“保護暨環境學人奬”他曾服務於“中大西洋漁業管理委員會”，並曾擔任“史密生協會”的“海洋星球”顧問委員，以及“世界保護聯盟”的“鯊魚專傢小組”成員。1990年，沙夫納在“美國奧社邦協會”成立“活海洋計劃”，並擔任計劃主任。目前他住在紐約，是耶魯大學教授，卡爾·沙夫納是2000年安娜文學奬獲得者；獲得1998年《紐約時報》卓越圖書奬；1998年《洛杉磯時報》最佳非小說類圖書奬；1998年《圖書館雜誌》最佳科學圖書奬。
