約翰·赫西（John Hersey），中文名韓約翰，1914年生於天津，十歲時隨父母返迴美國，先後在耶魯大學、劍橋大學完成學業。1937年夏天，他在暑假期間為諾貝爾文學奬獲得者劉易斯•辛剋萊爾擔任秘書，同年鞦到《時代》雜誌工作，兩年後被派往《時代》的重慶分部。整個二戰期間，他往返於歐亞大陸，為《時代》、《生活》、《紐約客》撰稿。

約翰·赫西是最早踐行“新新聞”寫作手法的記者（盡管他後來對這種手法不無批評），對美國的新聞報道産生瞭很大的影響。他的主要作品有《廣島》、《阿達諾之鍾》（A Bell for Adano，1945年獲普利策奬）等。1965年起，約翰•赫西任教於耶魯大學，長期講授寫作課程。1993年逝世。

下的版本一直把of拆成兩個單字，其他詞都沒問題= = 其實感覺蠻好看的至少不是那種很蠢的作者

Stereotype...The book is simply a glorification of American democracy over the evil Fascism. It is a little too light and simple: the stereotypes of army personnel and the local Italian personalities seem so trite. And it seems to me that the book is a symbol of that era: the US, land of democracy, is trying to prove their superiority over Fascism.

有些復雜的人物，比如Tina的男友，但總體上是把戰爭和意大利人寫得比較臉譜化的。情節張馳有度，詞語簡單流暢，讀起來還是很享受的。3.5

有意思的書不太贊同樓上說的stereotype, 感覺那個評論人沒有好好讀。這本書裏有在批判美國的民主思想並且認為這種民主製度並不適閤每一個國傢。major的視角同樣也在反思美國自己軍隊內部的黑暗一麵。在探討這種題材的同時，還能保持詼諧幽默不乏故事性，看起來沒那麼嚴肅，真的很難得！
