注釋豐富且很有價值。書中還收錄瞭大量各種版本的The Hobbit插圖，非常有意思。最可愛的是António Quadros給1962葡萄牙版作的插圖，連trolls都不怎麼嚇人（完全就是人形嘛），而相比之下Torbjorn Zetterholm的1947瑞典版插圖就是陰暗恐怖的氛圍瞭——就算是第一章的也是如此，goblins就更不用說瞭。注釋說在1966版中初版裏的tomatoes被改為瞭pickles，Tom Shippey的解釋是托老意識到這樣一個外來詞不適閤這個基於英格蘭的霍比特人世界，LotR裏是用pipeweed和tater而不是tobacco和potato（這也太細心瞭對語言太敏感瞭……）。幾乎所有矮人名字（除瞭Balin和Oin）都齣自Elder Edda中的Voluspá。
