洪武年間恢復農業秩序緊隨的是明代商業化的開端。生產的過量，并將多餘的生產投入到貿易之後，是經濟的繁榮。而作者所探討的是這個背景下經濟繁榮和社會秩序之間的扭力（tension），即confusion困惑的結果。此書可以和巫仁恕關於明代消費，柯律格對長物志的研究和Jonathan Hay的sensuous surface並列起來讀，以求更全息的視野。此書作者用類似小說的方式來敘述歷史，這不僅是genre的選擇，更關乎歷史敘述是站在何人角度的問題。但歷史的小說和學術之間本身存在一道鴻溝，混雜起來確有些矯作之嫌。
