《綠雞蛋和火腿》的創作源於蘇斯博士和一位朋友打賭，能否用五十個單詞寫成一個故事。於是便有瞭這本膾炙人口的書。故事是容易引起孩子共鳴的熟悉話題——要不要嘗試新食物。故事情節發展激烈，一個拼命勸，一個玩命躲，最後的結局齣人意料。蘇斯博士的語言是節奏感很強的韻文，朗朗上口，書中所用詞匯很少，而且句子結構大量重復，隻置換少量單詞，孩子一旦記住瞭第一句，後邊的句子很容易讀齣來，讓孩子頗有成就感。
