家族秘密、历史创伤与个人成长的完美结合。形式上以编年、主题为线索的小章节之间看似关联不大，却暗藏了主人公一步步接近真相的推演步骤，带来一种侦探小说中的悬疑感。这本书最吸引人的地方在于作者将历史黑暗面那种鬼魅般的破坏性效应写得可知可感，老房子、历史事件的发生地、某个特定的人都成为了“记忆之场”，时刻提醒人们那些阴魂不散的过去永远不会消逝于时空之中。作者还结合了古老的口述传统，在叙事中融入爱尔兰民间传说的影子，使原本现实主义的描写平添了魔幻色彩。(Katie讲的那个故事主线很像Henry James的The Turn of the Screw，倒是很契合哥特和心理惊悚的整体氛围) 所以说秘密会使人疏离，记忆会成为伤痛，知情也不一定是幸福。

读关于autofiction材料时发现的书，副标题却是A Novel。语言优美有灵性，每一小节也不长，读起来很轻松。对”Katie's Story“印象很深，一个螺丝在拧紧式的故事。

An easy read with short episodes of memories. Deane's narrative lingers around the dark secrets and chaotic past in a sensitive and haunting manner. The Irish folklore tradition is prominent in his storytelling skill, but the characters seem a little bit bland and mashed.
