佐拉•尼尔•赫斯顿（1891-1960），美国黑人女作家，被誉为“南方的天才”。在美国第一个黑人小城伊顿维尔，赫斯顿度过了无忧无虑的童年；1918年进入霍华德大学就读文学系，1925年来到黑人文学的中心纽约，开始创作生涯，并成为哈莱姆文艺复兴运动的活跃分子。

赫斯顿在小说中大量使用黑人口语，以诗一般的语言去表达黑人语言之美。她的作品并不着眼于种族斗争，而是致力于表现：同其他人种一样，黑人也拥有生活的丰富性和对幸福的追求，也会面对生活中必然存在的不幸和悲剧。
