Hornblower幸运地当上了"热刺"号的船长, 但是他的正式军衔还是master and commander(看了这书我才知道原来这是一个词). 热刺号和海峡舰队的任务是封锁法国港口, 监视法国舰队动向, 日复一日枯燥的任务. 当然, 我们的主人公还是勤勤恳恳的完成本职工作, 时不时的还动动脑筋夜袭下法国佬的电报站啊运兵船什么的. 巨额赏金当前, 依然能让别人吃肉自己啃骨头, 以热刺一条小船和法国快速战舰周旋, 直到对方收兵. 当然, 这样机智勇敢诚实正直又是主人公的Hornblower好人有好报, 终于被提拔成captain(上校). 某些技术描述有点枯燥, 如果我对风帆战舰的操纵有点了解到话, 也许更能欣赏Hornblower的能力.
