西方History of masculinity的最早作品，作者在boston的贵族男校当历史老师，书中重点也是white, middle class, Puritan transformation of masculinity，以时间线分成几个章节，boyhood, youth, marriage, work等，个人很喜欢male intimate friendship一章。喜欢这种私密的日常生活史，就像作者在前言里说的，性别研究中的男性是模糊的、无名的黑影，这本书给“男性”以具象。比照来看，the manhood is profoundly influenced by culture，文化给行为以注解。老师还提到了给同性性行为的命名，如何不以当代的“话语”描述历史。
