Within visual literacy there are different ways to read, for example, music videos on MTV, video games, websites and billboards. Using these secondary oral environments, Elaine Richardson explores rap and Hip Hop discourse within a trajectory of Black discourses. She relates these discourses to the lived experiences of Black people, which have emanated from their quest for self-realization and their engagement in a discursive dialectic between various vernacular and dominant meaning-making systems. Investigating the appeal of the Afrodiasporic strategies at the core of Global Hip Hop, this fascinating and lucid account highlights how Black youth, such as Kimberly Jones (aka Lil' Kim), read the world they inhabit and use available resources to struggle against forces that would annihilate them.
