內容4星；封面+1星。又一本關於古希臘戰爭的書，內容涉及的範圍比較廣，不僅僅討論了戰爭本身的問題，對大部分學者所忽略的戰爭對城邦經濟的影響也有所涉及。在第四章，作者反駁了傳統觀點(即所謂的Hoplite Contest)，指出古風時代各城邦之間戰爭並非是為確保公平性與競技性而進行的“約戰”；像斯巴達與阿爾戈斯之間的battle of champions這樣的case實際上僅僅是個案而已，並不能代表當時的普遍情況。另外作者似乎把重裝步兵從步兵方陣戰的框架中抽取出來，集中討論了重裝步兵在非方陣戰時的作用，這個關註點比較有趣，值得深入探討。還有這本書的封面設計很不錯，應該是我見過的所有學術著作中最漂亮的了，因此加1星。
