extremely passionate and comprehensive. I would recommend it to any readers who are interested in Sulla but don't share the taste of dull academic works. I'm quite moved by Keaveney's description of Sulla about how he maintained the lifelong friendship with the theatre gangs even when he was at the summit of power.

作者博論的改編，總體內容一般，有些觀點腦洞開的太大瞭，很難認同。另外作者對蘇拉是否剝奪瞭保民官提案權的問題的討論比較有新意，但對於蘇拉時期元老院的權利問題，作者的觀點還是太傳統瞭，個人感覺仍有商榷的必要。

非常詳細且富有感情地描述瞭蘇拉的生平，亦是為其正名之作，值得翻譯引進。蘇拉一退到底，僅為一介羅馬公民，也不知道繼續當好羅馬軍委主席扶年輕同誌一程，尚未身故，即已號令不遵。加之其僅重視發揮元老院作用，忽視下一代核心的選拔培養，緻使下世不久即有前三頭、後三頭，其苦心強化的共和體製僅靠西塞羅、加圖等人勉強維持。較之凱撒、屋大維等以身許國之輩，韆百年下蘇拉之高風亮節令人不勝唏噓
