伦奎斯特本人对最高院的全面介绍，也是他五部著作里唯一一本没亏钱的。用他本人1952年作为大法官助手来到这里的回忆做引子，涵盖了从马歇尔到沃伦的一百多年的历史。这些在今天读起来已经不觉得新鲜了，反倒是法官们怎么选助手、分配办公室的内容更有意思。1987年出版时，其中关于判决前闭门讨论会的内容是首次披露，本书是2001年的增订版。
