作者：霍华德•斯波德，1963年从哥伦比亚大学历史学本科毕业，主修亚洲史。1966年和1972年，斯波德先后获得芝加哥大学历史学硕士和博士学位，主修印度史。他游历广泛，足迹遍布美国、亚洲、非洲和欧洲。自1972年以来，他一直在坦普尔大学任教，并在1984年获聘正教授。1993年，斯波德获得“坦普尔大学杰出教师奖”。

主译、审订者：吴金平，1994年和1997年，他先后获得南开大学历史学硕士和博士学位。自1997年以来，一直在广州的暨南大学任教，2007年获聘正教授，2008年获聘博士研究生导师，现兼任暨南大学学位评定委员会法学分委会成员、政治学学科组成员。主要从事美国史、华侨华人史与国际关系的研究和教学。参与翻译《美利坚合众国总统就职演说全集》（第二译者，天津人民出版社，1996年出版，1997年再版），主译并校订<美>马克•C.卡恩斯与<美>约翰•A.加勒迪著《美国通史》（第12版，山东画报出版社，2008年9月）。他在历史学方面的代表作为《自由之路》（中国社会科学出版社，2000年），该书也同时用英文在美国出版，名为Frederick Douglass and the Black Liberation Movement: the North Star of American Blacks（New York & London: Garland Publishing Inc., 2000）。
