考虑到作者本人多语言的文化背景和研究中世纪诗歌的履历，本书行文不够干净利落的情况还是比较让人吃惊的：一是不少长句拖沓导致论说重点不明确，二是有些关键词用的频率次数实在太多了。精彩之处在有两个章节：1、从阿维森纳穿梭到阿韦罗伊、迈蒙尼德的个人历史遭遇最后落脚阿奎纳；2、对塞万提斯的解读非常有博尔赫斯短篇的韵味。
