Just how did you end up in this mess? All of your friends were doing it,
so you assumed it was safe to try it out for yourself. You thought it would
be the perfect escapist trip to stave off the inevitable: the abysmal sink-
hole of living responsibly in a civilized society. And besides, it s not like
it s your money that s vanished into the unknown with little or nothing to
show for it. The thought that all those lurid movies and books might not
be telling you the whole truth never crossed your mind. Well, it s too late
now; the illusion is beginning to crumble around you.., and you still have
four years of college to go.
The chilling reality of post-adolescent academia is thus: College is a com-
plicated maze peopled with bureaucratic administrators (only a bursar
knows what a bursar does), grad students who sneer at you for not being
as cultured and educated as they are, and professors who require you
to memorize (and therefore purchase) their one published book, which
they ve been able to foist upon the college bookstore. The nightmarish-
ness of it all is enough to make even the sturdiest of students long for
a return to the simplicity of high school. However, wish though one might,
there s no going back to the halcyon days of your teens. Thus, coping
mechanisms are required.
Some (rather na ive) students opt to face the collegiate challenges head-on
by doing too much. The foolhardy Overachiever spends the majority of his
free time studying, actively participating i~ clubs and student government,
and generally finding new ways of minimizing the amount of free time he
has. Sure, he graduates with stellar grades and a bloated r~sum~, but he
hasn t truly enjoyed a moment of his past four years; and the truth is, future
employers don t care much that he was treasurer of the student council.
