Soon after its 1749 publication, Tom Jones was condemned for being lewd,” and even blamed for several earthquakes. But what really riled its critics was its supremely funny satirical attack on eighteenth-century British society and its follies and hypocrisies which, of course, are very much like our own.

生平

1707年菲尔丁生于英国萨默塞特郡，就读于伊顿公学。他的妹妹后来也成为了著名作家。菲尔丁写了一部浪漫小说，却因此引起了官司，之后他前往伦敦继续写作。1728年菲尔丁前往荷兰莱顿学习，回到英国之后，他开始为剧院创作剧本。他当时的一些作品对当时沃尔波尔爵士领导的英国政府进行了辛辣的讽刺，特别Golden Rump一剧，作家的讽刺功力初露锋芒，但也导致了1737年政府宣布实施剧院许可证法案。

这一法案使得上演的剧本时刻受到怀疑，在舞台上讽刺政治已经不再可能。菲尔丁因此退出剧院，重操法律旧业。1748年他成为米德尔塞克斯和威斯敏斯特的治安官员。

读后感

近来读张谷若先生译的《弃儿汤姆·琼斯史》，其中的译注经常占一页的大部分篇幅。这个译本比萧乾，李丛弼译本多了三十万字，多出来的，译注就占了很大的比重。张先生的译作不多，但以文字古奥见长，所以有些人会抱怨。记得当年我读哈代的《苔丝》（或是《裘德》）读了几十...
