如果麥剋盧漢寫的是關於理解“媒介”這個東西，那麼這本理論延伸的小書講的則是“理解媒介”這件事。作者提齣一種名為multiattentional/“多關注點”的理解模式，講人們理解世界的角度分為poetic/formal/medial三種形態，並以此分析瞭大眾對媒介的普遍理解中三個確定性的點，即媒介作為通信器材、媒介作為信息和傳播的技術、媒介作為文化錶達的載體。讀罷不得不感慨近五十年媒介變化過於迅猛瞭，研究不但永遠滯後，而且在開始研究的一瞬間就已經過時瞭，看07年舉的例子感覺像來自上個世紀——telephony是什麼老掉牙的東西呀？
