208頁的正文，能把Diocletian的宗教迫害、君士坦丁生平、尼西亞會議、Arius引起的分裂說得清清楚楚，還引用瞭不少君士坦丁書信、敕令的全文，A.H.M.Jones的功力可見一斑。作者對現存史料（尤西比烏）基本采信，也不懷疑君士坦丁的宗教熱情，將其轉嚮基督教視為偶然事件決定（205），他看到的異象實為光暈（85，90頁）。Jones還說，君士坦丁的皈依是一種religious experience，而不是spiritual experience（90頁），辨析準確。第三、四章介紹paganism和大迫害，每個話題都用10頁左右篇幅說明，實在是遊刃有餘。君士坦丁即位前的史事紛亂，容易讓人頭疼。

看瞭一半要用的章節 雖然書老 但是故事講得尤其清楚 文風很好。受限年代史料批判吃瞭虧 不知道為什麼沒有腳注和材料齣處 有些材料新的研究反而沒提到 非常適閤對這個問題感興趣的人 上手先讀對史實形成基本印象
