208頁的正文，能把Diocletian的宗教迫害、君士坦丁生平、尼西亞會議、Arius引起的分裂說得清清楚楚，還引用瞭不少君士坦丁書信、敕令的全文，A.H.M.Jones的功力可見一斑。作者對現存史料（尤西比烏）基本采信，也不懷疑君士坦丁的宗教熱情，將其轉嚮基督教視為偶然事件決定（205），他看到的異象實為光暈（85，90頁）。Jones還說，君士坦丁的皈依是一種religious experience，而不是spiritual experience（90頁），辨析準確。第三、四章介紹paganism和大迫害，每個話題都用10頁左右篇幅說明，實在是遊刃有餘。君士坦丁即位前的史事紛亂，容易讓人頭疼。

看瞭一半要用的章節雖然書老但是故事講得尤其清楚文風很好。受限年代史料批判吃瞭虧不知道為什麼沒有腳注和材料齣處有些材料新的研究反而沒提到非常適閤對這個問題感興趣的人上手先讀對史實形成基本印象
