In his new book, Ethics for a Finite World, philosopher Herschel Elliott proposes a new way of looking at ethics, proposing moral principles that would help promote environmental, and thus overall social, objectives. Tackling issues as diverse as immigration policy, energy consumption and food production, Elliott takes on our orthodox assumptions of ethics, with the notion that the ultimate judge of an ethical code is not humankind, but Mother Nature herself. According to Elliott, unless humankind can find a humane manner to create a sustainable world, nature, which can be ruthless and brutal, will impose such a code.
